May 27th, 2009 at 13:13The visual explanation is this: If every 12 hours are numbered, then the Roman Dial an optical excess weight on the left side with the large numbers VII, VIII, IX and XI. To create a counterweight, the Roman was brought in four instead of form IV with four individual strokes (IIII) on the dial. Since the top and bottom of IIII equally readable, is thus confused with the VI.
